Muhammad Ali Jr. stopped at US airport again

first_imgMuhammad Ali Jr. The son of the late boxing champion Muhammad Ali was stopped by officials at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Friday.Muhammad Ali Jr. was traveling from Washington D.C. to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This is the second time in two weeks that the late boxer’s son was harried by airport officials and he is adamant that he is being profiled because he is a Muslim with an Arabic sounding name.Ali Jr. was stopped by a ticket agent who said his identification was expired and refused to give him his boarding pass. The agent informed Ali that his name was flagged and he would not be allowed to board the plane until the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was contacted, Ali has since protested that his ID is not expired and said there were no explanation given on why he was stopped for an “expired ID.” He said he eventually retrieved his passport and was allowed to board a JetBlue Airways flight after about 25 minutes.According to a statement from DHS Ali Jr. arrived at the security check point, his jewelry alarmed the scanner and he received a targeted pat-down to clear the alarm. On February 7, immigration officials at Fort Lauderdale Airport detained and extensively questioned Ali and his mother, Khalilah Camacho-Ali, about their ancestry and religion. The mother and son, both born in the United States, have said in interviews that they believe they have been stopped because they are Muslim with Arabic names. Earlier this week, they announced a campaign for religious freedom in the spirit of the boxing icon, supported by ex-boxing greats Evander Holyfield, Larry Holmes, Roberto Duran and others. They say they are opposed to President Donald Trump’s travel ban, which they feel unfairly targets Muslims.last_img read more

Trump makes good on promise of deportation force

first_imgDeportation force The U.S. Government is moving rapidly to find ways to assemble the nationwide deportation force that President Donald Trump used as a pillar of his presidential campaign. An internal Department of Homeland Security has already found 33,000 more detention beds to house undocumented immigrants, opened discussions with dozens of local police forces that could be empowered with enforcement authority and identified where construction of Trump’s border wall could begin. The agency is also trying to source ways to speed up the hiring of hundreds of new Customs and Border Patrol officers, including ending polygraph and physical fitness tests in some cases. But prohibitive costs outlined in a Department of Homeland Security internal report and resistance in Congress, where many lawmakers are already cautious of approving billions in spending on the wall and additional border security measures.Immigrant-rights advocates described the plans as an unnecessary waste of money and resources that are aimed at scaring the nation’s 11 million undocumented immigrants, many of whom have lived in the country for more than a decade.Although Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly has said DHS is not pursuing mass deportations, Trump’s executive orders broadly expanded the pool of undocumented immigrants who are deemed a priority for removal.last_img read more

Haiti gets help to pay insurance premiums

first_imgThe Barbados-based Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) has approved a three million US dollar grant to cover Haiti’s 2018-2019 insurance premiums with the Cayman islands-based Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility Segregated Portfolio Company (CCRIF SPC).CCRIF- SPC provides parametric insurance coverage to the Caribbean and Latin America and the CDB said that its funding will help Haiti meet the cost of the premiums for tropical cyclone, earthquake and excess rainfall coverage to which the Haitian government will contribute up to US$1.8 million. Most vulnerable to natural hazards“A large percentage of the population of Haiti is exposed to multiple hazards, due to climate change, the rapid growth of unplanned settlements, and ecosystem degradation and decline,” said the CDB’s Director of Projects, Daniel Best, who also noted that among the bank’s 19 Borrowing Member Countries (BMC), Haiti is one of the most vulnerable to natural hazards. The CDB said that given Haiti’s fragility and high vulnerability to natural hazards, in its 2017-2021 Country Strategy for Haiti, the lending institution committed to continue paying the country’s annual CCRIF SPC premiums.“Further, in the most recent negotiations for the replenishment of the Bank’s Special Development Fund, contributors agreed that there should be a continuation of the grant-supported programme of assistance for Haiti. Disaster risk reduction is among the main areas in which CDB will invest,” the CDB added.last_img read more

Caribbean American legislators welcome healthcare for undocumented Caribbean immigrants

first_imgSource: Facebook NEW YORK,  CMC – Caribbean American legislators in New York City, Councilman Jumaane Williams and Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte, have welcomed Mayor Bill de Blasio’s unveiling of “the largest, most comprehensive plan” in the United States to guarantee health care for every New Yorker, including undocumented Caribbean and other immigrants.“I was glad to see the announcement that the city will be moving to expand healthcare access to uninsured New Yorkers through the expansion of our public option and through the ‘NYC Care’ program,” Williams, the son of Grenadian immigrants, who represents the primarily Caribbean 45th Council District in Brooklyn, told the Caribbean Media Corporation. “I thank Mayor de Blasio for taking a leadership role on this all-important issue,” added the candidate for public advocate in the city. “I have been a longtime advocate for single-payer healthcare, and as we move toward the implementation of that policy for New York State, we should do all we can to provide universal coverage in our city.”Healthcare expanding to 600,000 New YorkersWhile stating that many of the details of the plan still need to be expanded on, Williams said he was “excited by the concept of using the tools we have to expand healthcare to the 600,000 New Yorkers currently left behind. “I am also excited that both physical and mental health are taken into consideration,” he said, disclosing that his family has “worked across many areas of the healthcare industry.”He noted that “just a few years ago, when I faced a life-threatening health emergency, the work of dedicated doctors and nurses saved my life. “All New Yorkers should have access to this kind of high-quality care,” Williams said. “While the federal government is more concerned with an asinine wall than people dying because of a lack of healthcare, the city should lead the way in fulfilling the core principle that healthcare is a human right.”Bichotte the daughter of Haitian immigrants, who represents the 42nd Assembly District in Brooklyn, said she has “seen first-hand some of the disadvantages that our healthcare system deals to people who are of a different background than their provider, be it racially, culturally, or economically. “Everyone should have a right to affordable, safe, culturally sensitive, high quality health care regardless of their economic situations,” said Bichotte, the first Haitian American from New York City to be elected to the New York State Assembly. “With NYC Care, the citizens of this great city can finally exercise that right.“The announcement of this program could not come at a better time,” she added. “Even as the country at large grapples with the Trump administration’s fearsome immigration policies and tactics, New York City stands as an example and guarantees health care to all, including targeted immigrants. “Culturally sensitive and high-quality health care should be a basic human right.” To strengthen MetroPlusThe mayor said the plan will serve the 600,000 New Yorkers without insurance by strengthening New York City’s public health insurance option, MetroPlus, and guaranteeing anyone ineligible for insurance, including undocumented New Yorkers. The programs will include customer-friendly call lines to help New Yorkers – regardless of their insurance – make appointments with general practitioners, cardiologists, pediatricians, gynecologists and a full spectrum of health care services, de Blasio said.“Health care is a right, not a privilege reserved for those who can afford it,” he said. “While the federal government works to gut health care for millions of Americans, New York City is leading the way by guaranteeing that every New Yorker has access to quality, comprehensive access to care, regardless of immigration status or their ability to pay.” Ahead of the rest of the nation“With today’s announcement of NYC Care, New York City takes another leap ahead of the rest of the nation in providing mental health services,” said First Lady Chirlane McCray, who traces her roots to Barbados and St. Lucia. “Guaranteed health care means guaranteed mental health care and alcohol/drug addiction treatment.“No other city or state provides these comprehensive services to all residents,” she added.8 million New Yorkers have health insuranceThe mayor said, thanks to the Affordable Care Act, 8 million New Yorkers now have health insurance, adding that the uninsured rate is about nearly half of what it was in 2013. In the last two years, he said New York City’s Public Engagement Unit coordinated signing up more than 130,000 New Yorkers for plans through the exchanges created by the law. But de Blasio said about 600,000 New Yorkers, including many Caribbean immigrants, remain without insurance, “because they do not or cannot enroll.”Through this new initiative, the mayor said New York City will create a “bigger, better, more comprehensive program for guaranteed health care.”He said the city aims to better connect people to more effective and affordable health care in one of two ways.Through NYC Care, the mayor said anyone will be able to access comprehensive care across NYC Health + Hospitals’ more than 70-plus locations, “once the program is fully ramped up.” Through NYC’s Public Option, de Blasio said the city will “double down on efforts to boost enrollment in MetroPlus.”He said MetroPlus provides free or affordable health insurance that connects insurance-eligible New Yorkers to a network of providers that includes NYC Health + Hospitals’ 11 hospitals and 70 clinics.De Blasio said the city will also improve the quality of the MetroPlus customer experience through improved access to clinical care, mental health services, and wellness rewards for healthy behavior. The mayor said the city is taking an “unprecedented approach” to health care services by “tackling mental and physical issues holistically.”Through both programs, he said New Yorkers will be able to access addiction services and opioid treatment, mental health counseling, and counseling services for trauma victims. De Blasio said New Yorkers will be able to call MetroPlus or 311 to be screened for health insurance eligibility and get connected to their best coverage option. He said NYC Care will launch in summer 2019 and will roll out geographically, starting in the Bronx. It will be fully available to all New Yorkers across the five boroughs in 2021, the mayor said. He said the program will cost at least US$100 million annually at full scale.last_img read more

Haiti’s Central Bank Governor concerned about depreciation of local currency

first_imgGovernor of the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH) Jean Baden Dubois PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – Governor of the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH) Jean Baden Dubois, has expressed concern about the deterioration of the national economy in the wake of the depreciation of the local currency – the Gourde.High inflationSpeaking at a recent press conference, Dubois said in April, inflation surpassed 17.7 per cent and coupled with political unrest, he believes that these factors, among others, have contributed to the country’s instability. The governor said a series of administrative and regulatory measures, direct monetary policy measures and incentives will be taken to stabilize the exchange rate on the market local.Interest rate adjustmentIn addition, he announced an interest rate adjustment for BRH bonds –  91-day bonds will increase from 12 to 22 per cent 28-day bills from 8 to 14 per cent  and 7-day bills from 6 to 10 per cent a measure which he says will have positive spin-offs for the clients of the commercial banks.Regarding the pressure on the US dollar and its scarcity, he announced an injection of US$150 million on the foreign exchange market by September 2019, including US$25 million on June 4 and US$15 million on June 6.But despite these measures, the governor says he  fears that the socio-political situation is further deteriorating and hindering the achievement of the objectives  – based on this he has also called on politicians to compromise to find a consensual solution to the crisis and to promote macroeconomic stability essential for economic growth in Haiti.last_img read more
