Express photo by Ganesh Shirsekar Related News Before 1845 getting to Bandra from Mahim was nothing like what it is today The lack of any land route meant taking a ferry between the two points The situation would get worse during monsoons with many losing life during the sail While the government struggled to collect funds to construct a causeway for better connectivity in the island city one Parsi family took it upon itself to construct the Mahim Causeway Today one of the roads — Lady Jamsetjee Road — along the causeway is the only reminder of this important contribution made by Avabai Jamsetjee and her family to the city Avabai’s husband Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy was the first Baronet and a very successful Parsi businessman While the then British government wanted to build a causeway and sought funding through public subscription it was unable to realise the plan leading to Jamsetjee Jejeeebhoy and his family meeting the cost Lady Jamsetjee however laid one condition for the funding — residents of the city should not be burdened with toll The reason for taking on this construction by the family was owing to a disaster that struck in 1841 when 15-20 boats capsized while crossing the creek resulting in several lives being lost “When news of this tragedy reached Lady Jamsetjee she expressed her desire to bear the cost of building a causeway linking Mahim and Bandra Jamsetjee wrote to the government expressing his wife’s offer to donate Rs 100000 towards the construction of the causeway to ease the journey from reaching the island of Salsette from Bombay” said Sir Jamsetjee Jejeeebhoy the 8th Baronet and the successor to Sir Jeejeebhoy’s baronetcy “Since the estimate provided by the government was found to be exorbitant Jamsetjee asked the government to invite tenders for this work Finally the tender submitted by one Jamsetjee Dorabjee Naigaumwala was accepted and he undertook to complete the causeway in two and a half years Construction began in 1843 Later the authorities realised the estimate had fallen short and the government approached Lady Jamsetjee again who donated another Rs 40000 on condition that no toll would be collected for the use of the causeway” said the 8th Baronet The construction was completed on April 8 1845 “At the inauguration Lady Avabai agreed to donate another Rs 22000 to build an approach road from Mahim bazaar to the causeway The road was opened in 1848 and bears the name Lady Jamsetjee Road even today” he added“There is also a legend attached to the construction of the causeway” said Sir Jeejeebhoy None of the two daughters born to Avabai survived beyond their infancy She had three sons but wanted a daughter and sought to make a wish before Our Lady of the Mount that if she were blessed with a daughter who survived till the age of seven years she would repay her debt of gratitude to Virgin Mary “In 1834 Avabai gave birth to a girl named Pirojbai and as the years went by Avabai kept renewing the vow she had made until Pirojbai attained the age of seven Avabai fulfilled her vow by deciding to contribute towards the causeway around the time the major accident took place The parents also gifted a pearl necklace and earrings to adorn the statue of Virgin Mary” said Sir Jeejeebhoy The family is also believed to have funded the steps leading to the shrine“She was a very private person She ensured that her daughter got the same education as her sons” he added “Avabai was the daughter of Framji Nusserwanji Battliwala who sold bottles in the Fort area Jamsetjee was Avabai’s cousin who used to work with her father Jamsetjee over the years became a successful businessman through his voyages to China The Causeway was constructed out of compassion for the fishermen who lost their lives while crossing the creek” said research scholar Nawaz Mody In recognition of these services Jamsetjee was conferred a knighthood in 1842 and Avabai become Lady Jeejeebhoy Subsequently in 1857 a baronetcy was conferred upon Jamsetjee Have a comment or suggestion for Streetwise Write to [email protected] with subject line: Streetwise For all the latest Mumbai News download Indian Express App More other local residents Pradeep Vaghela (21) and Suresh Adesara (20) were also arrested on the day Hardik a science graduate had told the police that they had given Boliya fake notes of Rs 225 lakh face value in two installments “During primary interrogation Boliya confessed that he had received fake notes of Rs 25000 value from Hardik and others against a payment of Rs 7000 in genuine currency After successfully putting the fake Rs 25000 notes into circulation he accepted another batch of counterfeit currency of Rs 2 lakh face value by paying Hardik Rs 60000” Sandipsinh Chudasama in-charge Police Sub-inspector (PSI) of SOG said on Wednesday Police added Boliya had dumped fake notes of around Rs 50000 face value in Narmada river after Hardik and his two accomplices were arrested “Boliya was stuck in a traffic jam when the local police were checking the vehicles Boliya apprehended that the checking was to arrest him since his suppliers were already nabbed Therefore he claimed he threw the fake notes in Narmada while crossing the Golden Bridge” the PSI said Incidentally the Local Crime Branch of Amreli had arrested two men after seizing counterfeit notes of Rs 110 crore face value from the time but had exchanged numbers” Chudasama said The SOG added the modus operandi of both the gangs was same “They used to scan the genuine Rs 500 or Rs 2000 notes take their multiple printouts stamp them for water marking and then paste security threads to make them look genuine” he said The SOG officer further said that Hardik had learned the trick of printing fake currency notes from Sachin and therefore he had also been named as an accused in Friday’s FIR filed with Bharatnagar police station For all the latest City Others News download Indian Express App More Related NewsWritten wasn’t about Rahul “Earnest” Gandhi And it wasn’t much about the general elections either It was more about Robert “Damaad Shri” Vadra “Honeymoon” Ramdev Priyanka “Last Congressman or woman Standing” Gandhi and of course Narendra “Barrel-chested” Modi Derek “Quizmaster” O’Brien (TMC) gate-crashed this high-profile headline party by trying to change Modi’s professional qualifications from tea stand-up and now sitting down comic John Oliver He devoted over five minutes of the premiere episode to the indifference of the American media to the Indian polls — “the biggest election in human history” “handsome” Rahul “hologram” Modi and the Foxification of our TV news channels The latter he illustrated with clips from Times “Shouting” Now matches and CNN-IBN’s incorrect graphic “A Billion Votes” whereas there are 815 million voters Well it was fun while it lasted although it was a bit far-fetched to claim that Modi was fighting this election on the strength of “toilets” for everyone even as bathroom humour From what we watch on TV news the election campaign is no laughing matter We saw Ramdev hurt Rahul’s feelings by saying he wants to marry a foreigner but his mother wants him to be prime minister first (boo-hoo) and the feelings of Dalits by saying that Rahul visits their homes for “picnics” and “honeymoon” (for which he’d have to be married first right) The BJP insulted the first family’s son-in-law to target Priyanka for deriding Modi’s 56-inch chest with its video broadcast on all news channels entitled “Damaad Shri” That was difficult to engage with for the lay viewer but obviously hit its mark because Priyanka immediately fired back with her description of the BJP as “panic-stricken rats” It’s been very much a Priyanka Gandhi week with the media — and the BJP — hanging on to every word she had to utter That’s the thing about this election: leading politicians are using the media to address each other rather than to address the problems facing the people They are talking to each other and they’re talking to the entire nation via TV (or in Modi’s case holograms) So Priyanka may be delivering an election speech in Rae Bareli but her remarks are for the BJP and a national audience Also the media is largely indifferent to coverage of the problems facing the people and how politicians on the campaign trail say they will tackle them The media concentrates on the day’s tu-tu-main-main This has made much of the TV coverage a simple affair: during the day there’s coverage of speeches by Modi and then whatever footage is available of a Gandhi campaigner followed by Kejriwal — uncharacteristically quiet in the last week or is he being drowned out by the Modi-Gandhi battle cries In the evening their most quotable sound bites become the subject of the TV shouting matches Zee News broke through the noise on Monday by broadcasting an interview with Modi the latest in a string of interactions he has had with Hindi/ regional language news channels Notice that the mainstream English news channels have been studiously ignored by him Modi was expansive relaxed admitting he had weaknesses like any other human being that the Gujarat
