You will soon be able to do more with your Pokémon in Pokémon Go, according to Niantic Labs, the company behind the successful app, which announced a new “Buddy System” on Friday.Niantic said that the new system will allow players to choose a Pokémon to go on walks, which will allow them to pick up candy that can be used for power-ups and evolution. “You will be able to pick your favorite Pokémon from your collection to become your buddy, opening up unique in-game rewards and experiences,” the company wrote on its website. The announcement was predated by some legitimate rumors that claimed the code for the “Buddy System” was found in the last patch.According to the code, posted and detailed on GoHub and reported on IGN, players could choose a Pokémon to be buddies with, which sounds exactly like what Niantic just announced. Additionally, the code detailed that players will only be able to use one Pokémon at a time for this purpose and will only be able to collect a certain amount of candy per day.The amount of candy you can collect isn’t specified, but it’ll work on the same code that’s used to track the distance traveled for players, so a lot of what can make this work is already built in.There’ll also be a number of ways to walk with your Pokémon, depending on their size and type. It can even fly next to you or rest on your shoulder. The code was spotted on AeonLucid’s PogoProtos, which is a GitHub repository that collects proto files that can be used to decode other files from the app.One of the things missing from Pokémon Go has been the ability to interact with your Pokémon beyond fighting in gyms and feeding them candies. There isn’t a way to power-up your creatures either unless you catch multiples of the same type or happen to get a ton of candies when an egg hatches. Even gym battles don’t reward you with much for your Pokémon besides the hope that you can add it to the gym later. This, along with a trading system like in the proper games, could add more to the app, making it more interesting for people who may have dropped it or haven’t picked it up yet.
