Eastern Shore elementary students will soon have a new school. The Department of Education will invest $10.4-million to replace Lakeview Consolidated Elementary School in Porters Lake, Halifax Regional Municipality. The school is expected to open in September 2010. “A new school will ensure these bright, young students have a modern, well-equipped facility,” said Education Minister Karen Casey. “Educating to compete doesn’t just mean supporting universities and colleges. It also means giving students the advantage of a strong, positive start to their school career.” Ms. Casey made the announcement today, April 18, at an assembly of Lakeview Consolidated’s students. Lakeview Consolidated Elementary School’s two sites house 370 students in grades Primary to 6. The Lakeview campus in Porters Lake houses grades 2 to 6. A West Chezzetcook campus hosts grades Primary and 1. The Lakeview site was originally a renovation project submitted by the Halifax Regional School Board. But rising renovation costs made it more economical to build a new school, Ms. Casey said. The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal will begin potential site assessment after discussions with the board.
