first_imgThe Drake University football team returns to Drake Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m. and to host Valparaiso for its annual homecoming game.On Saturday, Paul F. Morrison, known by most as Mr. Drake, will be attending his 700th Drake football game. To help put this great accomplishment in perspective, Saturday’s game will Drake’s 1,127th game in program history.Drake is also recognizing the 1990 and 1995 teams, as well as four members of 1949 Salad Bowl team, Al Bagdonas, Bob Clark, Nick Manoles and Bill Ward. The 1995 team won the program’s first PFL championship and finished the year 8-1-1. The 1948 team defeated Arizona, 14-13, in the second ever Salad Bowl to finish with 7-3 record.   Drake is 1-1 in the PFL standings after a tough loss at Campbell on Oct. 10, while Valparaiso is also 1-1 in the PFL as the Crusaders defeated Davidson, 42-35, last week. The Bulldogs are 19-3 all-time against Valpo and have won 11-straight contests, dating back to 2004. Drake is an impressive 10-0 in the friendly confines of Drake Stadium against the Crusaders.  Drake’s defense continues to lead the squad as the team ranks first in PFL games in total defense by allowing just 239 yards per game. The Bulldogs also lead the conference in third-down conversion, holding opponents to a 22.2 percent (6-of-27). John Hugunin leads Drake’s defense with 43 tackles, including 6.0 for a loss, the most in the PFL. The fifth-year senior linebacker has also recorded five forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and three quarterback hurries.Drake’s offense is led by junior running back Conley Wilkins, who has scored 30 of Drake’s 117 points this season and rushed for 357 yards, the third-most in PFL.Valpo is led by sophomore quarterback Ryan Clarke, who was named PFL Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 5 after throwing for 244 yards and five touchdowns in the Crusaders 42-35 victory over Davidson. Print Friendly Versionlast_img
