A recent study from the Childhood Obesity Research Center at the Keck School of Medicine has found that the high fructose corn syrup used in sugary drinks such as sodas contains a higher level of fructose than previously thought.Gulp – Sumit Aggarwal, a second year graduate student studying electrical engineering, drinks soda in the campus center. A new USC study shows that levels of fructose sugar in soda are higher than originally believed. – Daniel Wang | Daily TrojanResearchers analyzed the content of 23 different sodas and compared the results to standard samples to determine the levels of various types of sugar, such as fructose and sucrose. The results showed that many of these levels were higher than what the manufacturers reveal and that the total sugar content was generally about 20 percent higher for fructose than the advertised level.Jaimie Davis, assistant professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine and co-author of the study, said the general assumption prior to the study was that the high fructose corn syrup used to sweeten beverages contained 55 percent fructose. The fructose content of foods and beverages containing high fructose corn syrup is not disclosed by manufacturers, and Davis said this assumed 55 percent figure raised questions among researchers who studied fructose and its effects on the human body.“For researchers, a lot of times, if we’re doing the analysis to look at the relationship between sugar-sweetened beverages and disease risk, we have to apply this generic 55 percent, because that’s what we’re told is in it,” Davis said. “We’ve always kind of expected that was not correct, and sure enough it’s actually about 65 percent.”The difference between the assumed and actual fructose levels of high fructose corn syrup raised concerns from experts regarding health problems related to the consumption of excessive fructose, Davis said.“It’s only a 10 percent difference, but it could actually dramatically affect the differences in causing disease in kids,” she said.Increased consumption of sugars, especially fructose, has been linked to side effects including various metabolic disorders. For young children, the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes increases dramatically with a diet high in sugars.“The latest reports suggest that if you were born in the year 2000, you have a 33 percent chance of developing Type 2 diabetes in your lifetime,” Davis said. “As obesity rises, we’re going to see a tremendous shift in diseases related to obesity and people are going to start living shorter life spans.”“Unless we change the trend of obesity, and change it drastically, we are looking at major health issues affecting our population — our children and adults,” she added.Although the results of the study revealed the high levels of sugar in drinks such as soda, Davis stressed that the study was indicative of a larger trend throughout the food and beverage industries and American consumers.“We need to take a little more caution and really look at the types of sugar and amount of sugar that’s in our products,” Davis said. “Just because the label says one thing doesn’t necessarily mean we should take it at face value. As consumers, a lot of times we don’t know what’s going into our food and beverages.”Even in stores where the ingredients are labeled on the sides of food products, Davis said, consumers still don’t truly know everything about their food because it is usually very highly refined.“Anytime you look at anything you buy from the store, it has 50 ingredients in it,” Davis said. “We’re getting away from real food and drinking water. We’re consuming a lot of different highly refined and highly sweetened products.”Davis said she hoped the results of the Center’s study will illustrate the extent of the problems faced by American consumers and inspire changes to reverse some of the developing unhealthy trends.“It takes changes at every level — at the individual level, at the family level, the community level, and up to large industry and ultimately policy, and making changes at a much larger scale,” Davis said. “We need to think across systems to solve this — doing interventions with just kids, just parents or just the community is not going to do it.”

Slowly but surely you’ve got to get their confidence back that they can play for this club.” Ads by Revcontent Trending Articles Urologists: Men, Forget the Blue Pill! Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The Map the Meal Gap 2015 report, released by Feeding America, reveals that food insecurity remains high throughout Ohio. The state’s 16.9% food insecurity rate is higher than the national rate (15.8%) and higher than all other Midwestern states except Missouri (17%). The report also found that about one in four children in Ohio (24.2%) live in food insecure households.“We may be six years out from the end of the Great Recession, but the economy has not recovered for everyone,” said Lisa Hamler-Fugitt, executive director of the Ohio Association of Foodbanks. “More than one in six Ohioans still struggle just to afford enough food for themselves and their families, and they are forced to make tough choices every day to cope.”A report released last week by the Food Research and Action Center called How Hungry is America? found that more than one in six Ohioans (18.1 percent) answered yes to the question, “Have there been times in the past 12 months when you did not have enough money to buy food that you or your family needed?” This finding ranked Ohio 19th in the country for worst food hardship rates in 2014. Among Midwestern states, only Michigan ranked higher (14th).“When families can’t afford adequate, nutritious food, they turn to federal nutrition programs for a woefully inadequate safety net,” said Hamler-Fugitt. “Unfortunately, since October 2013, our most vulnerable households have lost more than 258 million meals, or $357 million in federal food stamp benefits, from changes and reductions to the food stamp program. These folks have nowhere else to turn, so they are turning to our emergency food network in record numbers.”“We served more than 2 million different Ohioans last year,” said Hamler-Fugitt. “Hunger is not an isolated issue, and it has serious consequences for all of us. An economy cannot recover when one in six members is limited by a need to secure food. We must acknowledge that hunger is unacceptable, especially in our agriculturally strong state.”The Ohio House of Representatives is expected to release substitute H.B. 64 in mid April, which outlines its framework for the 2016-17 state biennial budget. The Ohio Association of Foodbanks is seeking an amendment for an additional $5.5 million per year for the Ohio Food Program and Agricultural Clearance Program to respond to the 40% increase in demand for foodbank services since 2010.
Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement sarah perez Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces Just ahead of the official start of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Samsung held its own press conference where it announced the second generation of two of its high-profile devices: the Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet computer. Neither launch was much of a surprise, considering the news had leaked online days in advance…right down to screenshots and specs. Nevertheless, Samsung still tried to pull its own variation of Apple’s “one more thing” and the end of an over-long conference in order to reveal its newest tablet.Samsung started its press conference talking stats associated with the original Galaxy S. Actually, scratch that – this is Samsung, after all – the same company that brought you “Zoll” during CES. (If you don’t know what that’s all about, check out Engadget’s archive for details of one of the most bizarre press conferences ever.) No, Samsung didn’t start with stats. It started the press conference with a live performance from an orchestra, violins and everything. This was a show!It was also a bad sign, as it turned out. But we’re not going to review Samsung’s performance at the event (well, maybe a little) – we’re here to talk new toys.Galaxy S IIThe Samsung Galaxy S II, is the second generation of the popular Android smartphone from this manufacturer and this time around, the specs are beefed up a little. The new version will have a 4.3″ Super AMOLED Plus screen, 8 megapixel camera and 2 megapixel front-facing camera, support for 1080p video, a dual core processor, an improved 1650 mAh battery, support for HSPA+ and a lighter (116 grams), slimmer (849 mm) form factor. It will run Google Android 2.3 (“Gingerbread”) and some models will be sold with NFC built in. NFC, or near field communication, is an emerging technology that will be used in mobile payment systems designed by operators, banks and maybe even Google itself. Related Posts It’s unclear whether or not the Samsung Hubs and the experiences they offer will come downstream to the original Samsung Galaxy S phones – and the execs I talked to weren’t sure either. One even told me that there’s not a single answer to that question, because the content varies by region. (In other words, Galaxy S I owners, don’t hold your breath.)Another new feature called Samsung Live Panel offers a new take on customizable homescreen widgets that can also feature Web content, content from apps, and messages. Plus, Samsung’s Kies Air software has been updated so you can sync your phones on Windows PCs without having to tether it to the computer via USB cable – the syncing occurs over-the-air. Other new enterprise features have been added, too, like Exchange ActiveSync (for Email, Contacts, Calendar + GAL searches) support for Cisco’s VPN, WebEx, and Mobile (VoIP) services. A partnership with Sybase brings mobile device management capabilities, and, says Samsung, the phone is the first Android device to offer on-device encryption.Galaxy Tab 10.1Then there was the “one more thing” – the next gen Galaxy Tab II that was meant to be a final pick-me-up after a long, and rather embarrassing collection of cheesy PR videos that featured in no particular order a “cold” boss who turned out to be a secret kitten rescuer, a senile grandma who uses her phone to remember poetry she thinks up while in her garden, a skateboarding kid whose phone helps me make friends in a new city and an Indian fashion designer who likes taking pictures of saris. No really, it was painful. YouTube it. I swear at one point I thought the execs were actually messing with us, an audience of tech press, many of whom were operating off one hour’s sleep (*cough, cough*), especially when they came out at the end of each video and asked, “Now, wasn’t that wonderful?” I was sure that this was, in fact, some form of parody. In any event, the Galaxy Tab 10.1’s reveal was also as expected, except for the name – it’s actually the Galaxy Tab 10.1, not the Galaxy Tab II as previously thought. Its name refers to the screen size, of course. It also has a Tegra 2 processor, 8 megapixel camera, support for HD playback and recording (Full HD, 1080p) and will come in both 16 GB and 32 GB sizes. It will also run Android 3.0 (“Honeycomb”). No exact details on pricing or U.S. launch dates on either of these devices, but they will be coming to Asia and parts of Europe in March. And no, original Galaxy Tab owners, you won’t be receiving a Honeycomb upgrade – ever – due to hardware limitations.Oh yes, and there were some stats announced somewhere in between the orchestra and the awful videos. We were told Samsung sold 25 million smartphones and tablets during 2010, 10 million of which were Galaxy S smartphones. We were not told, however, how many Galaxy Tabs were sold. That’s because we don’t know, says Kim Titus, Samsung’s Head of PR for Mobile, when I asked him later on. The operators would have to tell us that, he said. Hmm. Tags:#Android#mobile#news What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … On the software side, the phone will offer four Samsung branded apps – “Hubs” as they’re called – one for Music, one for Games, a Social Hub for keeping up with your friends and an iBooks-like Readers Hub that will feature “2.2 million books and novels, 2,000 global and local newspapers in 49 languages and 2,300 popular magazines in 22 languages,” according to Samsung’s announcement. Power windows can now be converted to Bezier curves in DaVinci Resolve 12. Learn how to use this timesaving feature.Colorists use tons of power windows in typical sessions. However, using a standard circle or polygon shape can sometimes “give away” especially extreme corrections. Bezier curves provide finer control by having the ability to add additional points without the jagged edges of the polygonal shape. Bezier softness around each point can be controlled as well, and with their amorphous shapes, they run less risk of being found out by the audience. In a brand new feature in DaVinci Resolve 12, power windows can now be converted to Bezier curves with the click of a button. This can help you to work faster in session. Let’s take the image below. Perhaps we want to treat the window differently than we want to treat the subject, a normal usage of power windows. The client has called out the window as being a bit too blue. Normally, the colorist would create a power window to address this concern. Our workflow will be to generate a power window using one of the standard shapes, and then convert it to a Bezier curve for further modification. I’ve found the simpler shapes to be faster to control, and after getting the window into a place we generally want, we can then add nuance by converting the circle to a Bezier shape. Let’s start with a circular power window.Circles can be faster because the softening affects the entire shape, unlike the polygonal window where each of the four corners has its own softening. Circles are also great to use for ovoid human faces. Draw the general shape, but don’t increase the softening, as converting to a Bezier object will reset any softening information.I’ve drawn the general shape of the window we’ll be tweaking to affect the window and exclude the subject’s shoulder. I’ve made the window a bit warmer, but we want to make sure this correction doesn’t affect him. When an approximate shape has been drawn, click the contextual menu within the Window palette (it looks like three dots) and select Convert to Bezier at the bottom.Click the contextual menu on the top-right of the Window panel (circled in blue) and select Convert to Bezier (also circled). A new window with Bezier points replaces the circular window, allowing for much finer control. Now is the time to adjust the Inside and Outside Softness to make sure our correction blends into the image. From here, we have ultimate control of the new power window, using the circular window as a general starting point, enabling us to work faster.
