Dehaney confident ahead of Aussie league debut

first_imgTwo years ago, Kadie-Ann Dehaney was the youngest member of Jamaica’s senior netball team to the World Cup in Sydney, Australia, as an 18-year-old student of St Hugh’s High School. These days, she is back ‘Down Under’, but this time to compete in the new professional league as a member of the Melbourne Vixens team.Dehaney has been in Australia for the past 10 weeks as she prepares to make her professional debut. The 20-year-old, who impressed the Melbourne Vixens staff with her performances at the World Cup, is one of three new recruits that will line up for the team when the competition gets under way on February 18.The Jamaican says that she has settled well and is looking forward to her new experience.”I am here for two months and two weeks so far, and it has been hard so far, but who says success comes easy?” said Dehaney. “Training sessions are tough, but the coach keeps informing me that it is meant to be tough.”Dehaney says that she is beginning to know her new teammates and is happy with her performance in her lone practice game to date. The Vixens defeated the Adelaide Thunderbirds – the team of fellow Jamaican Malysha Kelly – by over 20 goals, with Dehaney switching between the goalkeeper and goal defence positions throughout the contest.GOOD GAME”It was really a good game for us, and we will be playing another practice match against the Sunshine Coast Lightening on January 21,” the young Jamaican noted. This will be a good matchup for her team and her teammates as one of the world’s best shooters, Catlin Bassett, and her Australian shooting partner, Stephanie Wood, are members of this team. Two other Jamaicans will be involved in the competition: Romelda Aiken of the Queensland Firebirds; and Kelly, who is also in her first season with the Thunderbirds.”I can’t wait as I am definitely looking forward to playing against both Romelda and Malysha, and although we are on different teams, we keep in touch with each other. We communicate on a regular basis,” said Dehaney.last_img read more
