Drivers who cross the Gold River on Trunk 3 in Lunenburg County will soon be travelling on a new structure thanks to a tender announced today, Aug. 22, by the province. The Department of Transportation and Public Works has called for tenders to replace the Gold River Bridge on Trunk 3 west of Chester. The tender closes on Thursday, Sept. 6. Included in the tender is the installation of a temporary, one-lane bridge to carry traffic during the removal and replacement of the existing bridge. “This is a busy bridge that carries several thousand vehicles a day,” said Ronald Chisholm, acting Minister of Transportation and Public Works. “Barring unforseen delays the temporary bridge could be in place by December and the new bridge ready to go by the end of next summer.” The Department of Transportation and Public Works’ highways division manages more than 23,000 kilometres of roads in Nova Scotia. It maintains 4,100 bridges and operates seven provincial ferries. Staff provide services from district offices in Bridgewater, Bedford, Truro and Sydney.
